Enhancing Power Quality in Lithium Battery Manufacturing with Advanced APF Solutions

As the global demand for lithium batteries continues to surge, manufacturing plants are facing increasing challenges related to power quality. High-frequency switching loads such as rotary kilns, induction heating, and other nonlinear equipment often generate excessive harmonic distortion and poor power factor—threatening the stability and efficiency of factory operations.

The Challenge

At a major lithium battery production facility in Tongling, Anhui, China, complex site conditions and fluctuating loads led to serious power quality problems. The main issues included:

  • Severe harmonic distortion, particularly even-order harmonics
  • Low power factor
  • Continuous malfunctioning and protection trips of capacitor banks due to harmonic overload

These issues not only impacted the plant’s operational efficiency but also posed risks to electrical equipment and increased energy costs.

The Solution: Enjoypowers APF Deployment

To address these challenges, Enjoypowers deployed 48 units of APF-150A active power filters across the facility. These APF systems are designed to dynamically filter out harmful harmonics and improve power factor in real time.

Results & Benefits

After the APF systems went online:

  • Total harmonic distortion (THD) was significantly reduced
  • Power factor improved to acceptable levels
  • Capacitor banks operated stably without triggering over-protection alarms
  • Overall power quality across the site was greatly enhanced

Why Power Quality Matters

In industries with sensitive and energy-intensive equipment, poor power quality can lead to:

  • Equipment overheating and premature failure
  • Higher energy bills due to penalties or inefficiency
  • Production downtime and safety risks

By installing active harmonic filters (APFs), facilities can maintain grid compliance, optimize energy use, and ensure uninterrupted operations.
